How Etsy Seller Fees Work in 2026

Etsy's fee structure is one of the most layered of any online marketplace. Unlike platforms that charge a single commission, Etsy applies five distinct fees to every sale. Understanding each one is critical for pricing your handmade goods, vintage items, or craft supplies profitably.

The first fee you encounter is the $0.20 listing fee. Every time you publish a product listing — or when it auto-renews every four months — Etsy charges twenty cents. If you sell a multi-quantity listing, a new $0.20 fee is charged for each unit sold because Etsy creates a new listing to replace the one purchased.

Next comes the 6.5% transaction fee, calculated on the total sale price including the shipping amount the buyer pays. This is Etsy's core commission and it applies to every order regardless of your shop size, revenue, or tenure on the platform.

Etsy also processes payments through its own system, Etsy Payments, and charges a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 per transaction for US sellers. International sellers pay different rates depending on their country — UK sellers pay 4% + £0.20, for example.

Etsy's Regulatory Operating Fee

In 2024, Etsy introduced a regulatory operating fee that varies by country. For US sellers, this adds approximately 0.29% to every transaction. While small on individual orders, this fee adds up across hundreds of sales per month. Etsy states this fee covers the cost of complying with local regulations in the markets where it operates.

When you combine the listing fee, transaction fee, payment processing, and regulatory fee, the effective Etsy fee rate for most US sellers is roughly 10.25% to 10.5% of the total sale amount. That means on a $50 item, you're paying approximately $5.13 to $5.25 in fees before accounting for any advertising costs.

Etsy Offsite Ads — The Fee You Can't Always Avoid

Etsy runs an Offsite Ads program that advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. If a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges an additional fee on that sale.

Sellers who made less than $10,000 in the last 12 months pay a 15% offsite ads fee but can opt out of the program. Sellers who earned $10,000 or more pay a reduced 12% fee but are automatically enrolled and cannot opt out. This is one of the most controversial aspects of selling on Etsy — high-volume sellers have no choice but to accept the additional cost on ad-attributed sales.

The offsite ads fee can dramatically change your profit on affected orders. On a $50 sale that came through an offsite ad, a mandatory-enrollment seller would pay roughly $6 in offsite ads fees on top of the standard ~$5.25 in other fees — totaling over $11 in deductions, or about 22% of revenue.

How to Minimize Your Etsy Fees

While you cannot negotiate Etsy's fee percentages, several strategies can reduce their impact on your bottom line:

  • Price with fees baked in. Use this calculator to determine your break-even price and add your desired margin on top. Never set prices without accounting for all five fee layers.
  • Opt out of Offsite Ads if eligible. If your trailing 12-month revenue is under $10,000, you can disable Offsite Ads in Shop Manager under Settings > Offsite Ads.
  • Build repeat customers. Direct returning buyers to your shop so sales aren't attributed to offsite ads. Include a thank-you card with your shop URL in every package.
  • Compare platforms. For certain product types, eBay or your own Shopify store may be cheaper. Use our cross-platform calculator above to compare.

Etsy vs Other Selling Platforms

At roughly 10.25% total fees, Etsy sits in the middle of the marketplace fee spectrum. eBay charges about 13.85% for most categories. Poshmark takes 20% on items over $15. Mercari charges approximately 12.9%. Depop shifted to a buyer-pays model, meaning sellers pay only payment processing (~3.6%).

However, fees are only part of the equation. Etsy attracts a specific audience looking for handmade, vintage, and unique items. If your products fit that niche, the platform's built-in traffic can justify the cost. For commodity items, eBay or Amazon may deliver better results despite higher fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total Etsy fee percentage?

For most US sellers, the total Etsy fee is approximately 10.25% to 10.5% of the sale price (including shipping). This includes the 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 payment processing fee, $0.20 listing fee, and the regulatory operating fee. If an offsite ad attributed to the sale, add an additional 12-15%.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee is calculated on the total order amount, which includes the item price plus any shipping charges. Payment processing fees also apply to the full amount including shipping. This is why offering "free shipping" by building it into your item price doesn't change your total fees.

Can I opt out of Etsy Offsite Ads?

Only if your shop earned less than $10,000 in the trailing 12-month period. Sellers above $10,000 are automatically enrolled and cannot opt out. The fee is 15% for opt-in sellers and 12% for mandatory-enrollment sellers, charged only on sales that come through an offsite ad click.

How much does it cost to list on Etsy?

Each listing costs $0.20 to publish and $0.20 to renew every four months. When you sell a multi-quantity item, a new $0.20 fee is charged for each unit sold. There is no monthly subscription required — you only pay listing fees as you list and sell items.

Is Etsy cheaper than eBay for sellers?

Generally yes. Etsy's total fees are roughly 10.25% compared to eBay's 13.85% for most categories. However, the comparison changes if Etsy Offsite Ads apply to your sale (adding 12-15%) or if you qualify for eBay Store discounts. Use our calculator to compare fees for your specific item price.
