eBay Sales Tax: What Sellers Need to Know
eBay collects and remits sales tax on behalf of sellers in all states that require it. This means you don't need to collect sales tax yourself — eBay handles it automatically. The buyer sees the tax at checkout and eBay sends it to the state.
However, eBay's final value fee is calculated on the pre-tax sale amount (item price + shipping), not the amount including sales tax. So while sales tax doesn't increase your fees, it does affect what the buyer pays overall.
The $600 1099-K Threshold
If you receive $600 or more in payments through eBay in a calendar year, eBay is required to send you a 1099-K form and report your earnings to the IRS. This applies regardless of the number of transactions.
Important: the 1099-K reports gross sales, not profit. You can deduct your expenses (COGS, shipping, fees, supplies) on your tax return. Keep detailed records of all purchases and expenses to reduce your taxable income.
- Track your COGS. The price you paid for each item is a deductible expense.
- Track shipping costs. All shipping labels, packaging, and supplies are deductible.
- Track eBay fees. All platform fees are tax-deductible business expenses.
- Track mileage. Trips to source inventory, post office, or thrift stores may be deductible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?
No. eBay's final value fee is calculated on the item price plus shipping, not including sales tax. eBay collects and remits sales tax separately.
When does eBay send a 1099-K?
eBay sends a 1099-K if you receive $600 or more in gross payments in a calendar year. This is required by the IRS regardless of the number of transactions.
Do I owe taxes on personal items I sell?
If you sell personal items for less than you originally paid, that's a capital loss — not taxable income. However, you'll still receive a 1099-K if total payments exceed $600, and should be prepared to document the original purchase price.
Can I deduct eBay fees on my taxes?
Yes. eBay fees, shipping costs, packaging supplies, COGS, and other selling expenses are deductible if you're selling as a business or for profit.
